Direct Care Shelter Staff

Job Title: Part Time Direct Care Staff (Shelter)

Job Type: Hourly, Weekday Evenings and Weekends

Supervisor’s Title: Program Manager

General Summary: As an evening shelter staff member, you will play an important role in creating a welcoming, respectful, and supportive environment for our residents. During these evening hours you will typically be the only Hope Harbor staff member present, meaning you will be the main point of support and connection for residents during that time. This is a unique opportunity to build positive relationships, offer encouragement, and help ensure each evening runs smoothly.

Previous shelter experience is not required. We are looking for individuals who are dependable, compassionate, and willing to learn. We provide training and ongoing support to help you feel confident and successful in your role.

Qualifications:

  • Pass a complete series of background checks

  • Possess a High School Diploma or GED, although an associate’s degree in Human Services or related field is preferred.

  • Current CPR and First Aid Certification or the ability to obtain these within thirty (30) days of being hired.

  • Be capable of accurately following written and verbal instructions.

  • Ability to communicate effectively; orally, typed, and written.

  • Ability to be reliable and punctual

  • Ability to work with persons in need in a compassionate and dignified manner.

  • Ability to maintain, resident, staff, and volunteer confidentiality.

  • Ability to de-escalate situations that may arise between residents.

  • Must be able to work independently with a minimum amount of supervision.

General Skills:

  • General knowledge of human service operations and community services.

  • Knowledge of computers.

  • Skilled in written and oral communications.

  • Ability to plan, multi-task, and prioritize work.

  • Ability to maintain client, staff, and volunteer confidentiality.

  • Ability to perform general office duties.

  • Ability to work with staff and volunteers in a “team” environment.

  • Ability to be reliable and punctual.

  • Ability to perform in a professional business manner.

  • Ability to work with people in need in a compassionate and dignified manner.

  • Ability to lift and carry 20 lbs and navigate stairs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Create a Safe and Welcoming Environment

    • Help maintain a calm, safe, and respectful atmosphere for residents, visitors, volunteers, and staff.

    • Be available to answer questions, provide support, and assist residents throughout the evening.

    • Address concerns appropriately and communicate important information to the team when needed.

    • Monitor the shelter throughout the evening to help ensure the safety and well-being of residents and the facility.

  • Support Residents

    • Welcome and complete intake for new residents checking into the Emergency Shelter.

    • Serve as a positive role model by treating every resident with dignity and respect while recognizing that each person’s journey and path toward stability is unique.

    • Remain calm during challenging or unexpected situations and respond with empathy, professionalism, and appropriate boundaries.

    • Assist residents with understanding shelter expectations, daily routines, and successfully navigate their stay at Hope Harbor.

    • Provide encouragement, peer support, and trauma informed care while maintaining professional boundaries.

    • Distribute hygiene items, medications (according to shelter procedures), and other basic necessities as needed.

    • Offer community service opportunities and verify completion when applicable.

  • Evening Shelter Operations

    • Help ensure dinner and other evening routines run smoothly.

    • Maintain an active presence throughout both shelter programs, Emergency and Transitional side, to ensure operations run smoothly and residents receive appropriate support.

    • Respond calmly and effectively during medical emergencies by contacting the appropriate emergency services when needed.

    • Provide clear direction during severe weather, fire alarms, and other unexpected situations.

    • Answer incoming phone calls and assist individuals seeking shelter or information.

    • Receive donations dropped off during your shift and ensure they are placed in the appropriate location.

    • Help residents access supplies needed to complete their assigned chores.

  • Documentation

    • Complete accurate and timely documentation throughout shifts, including shift reports, resident interactions, incident reports, and intake paperwork.

    • Document chore completion and other required program information.

    • Communicate important updates to the next shift and Hope Harbor team to ensure continuity of care.

  • Professional Expectations

    • Maintain confidentiality regarding residents, staff, volunteers, and agency information.

    • Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, sound judgement, and respectful communication in all interactions with residents, coworkers, volunteers, and community partners.

    • Once fully trained, work confidently and independently while making thoughtful decisions that support both the safety of residents and the integrity of Hope Harbor.

    • Follow Hope Harbor policies and procedures while contributing to a positive team environment.
