Mission

Help and hope for a life of self-sufficiency.

Our mission is “Help and hope for a life of self-sufficiency.” Hope Harbor accomplishes this mission by providing services to individuals and families experiencing homelessness and near homelessness. We help meet the need for safe shelter, meals, and supportive case management with the goal of obtaining permanent housing and becoming self-sufficient.

Hope harbor’s Mission Statement

History

1994

  • Hope Harbor began as the Community Humanitarian Resource Center (CHRC) with six founding members: William Holloway, Ronda Wagner, Pam Morris-Stump, Lauri Shultis, Filemon Sanchez, and Rev. Timothy Anderson. CHRC was created as a solution to the growing issue of homelessness in our community. CHRC would provide hotel and motel vouchers and added a food and fuel voucher program as well.

1995

  • CHRC purchases a three story home located at 120 W 10th Street in Grand Island to serve as the first family shelter in Nebraska.

1998

  • CHRC is designated a United Way Partner Agency.

2004

  • The Community Humanitarian Resource Center officially changes its name to Hope Harbor.

  • Hope Harbor moves from the original shelter on 10th street to lease the former St. Mary’s Convent at 610 W Division Street.

2007

  • Hope Harbor begins the Building Hope for Tomorrow capital Campaign to purchase and renovate the shelter.

2010

  • Hope Harbor expands programming, including separate services for transitional shelter and emergency shelter and introducing life-skills classes for transitional shelter clients.

2015

  • Hope Harbor launches the Hope Expanding Capital Campaign to purchase an adjacent building into a service center, and then renovate the shelter. The campaign ended up raising over $1.9 million altogether.

2016

  • Hope Harbor completes the renovation and opens the Service Center, located at 615 W 1st Street.

2017

  • Hope Expanding shelter renovations completed, expanding the number of beds in the emergency & transitional shelter.

2019

  • Hope Harbor celebrates 25 years of service in Grand Island.
